Divorce

' * ' : not indicated because obvious or concept not applicable This cube contains data on all divorces (different-sex and same-sex couples) from the year 2023 onwards. Data on nationality, minor children and duration of marriage before divorce is currently not available for same-sex couples. For these variables, only different-sex couples are considered. From 1921 until 1932, only the nationality of the man is known. Since 1933, the nationality of both spouses before marriage is available. The articles mentioned describe the legal grounds of the divorce. They refer to the Federal law on civil status, its registration and marriage (of 24 December 1874) from 1886 to 1911, resp. to the Swiss Civil Code of 10 December 1907 which came into force on 1 January 1912. Since 2000, new legal grounds apply. As a result of a change in data source no such data are available after 2010.
1934-1982: when a divorce is based on more than one legal ground, only the main one is taken into account. Historical data taken from the publication « Historical Statistics of Switzerland » (Chronos, 1996) and the annual publications on Vital statistics (in French: « Mouvement de la Population de la Suisse »).
