Sources for the Cross-border Commuter Statistics are the Central Migration Information System (ZEMIS), OASI data, the Vocational Education Statistics (SBG), and for the time series prior to the 4th quarter 2010, the Job Statistics (JOBSTAT). Remarks:
Data users should be aware of the following: Although the published statistical breakdown comes mainly from the Central Migration Information System (ZEMIS), the findings are subject to a degree of uncertainty. The coding of some variables is not compulsory, nor does it undergo plausibility tests at the source. Furthermore, some job changes are not necessarily reported and are only recorded in the register upon renewal of the cross-border commuter permit. This can have an impact on the data on the place of work or economic sector, and, to a lesser extent, on the employment status.
Lastly, when compiling the statistic, the adjustments made and the retropolation and extrapolation method produce results with decimals points even though the statistics measure people.
The figures are rounded to one decimal place. Subsequently, the total of the breakdowns may not tally exactly with the sum of the variables. The figures with all decimal places are available in the csv file.
As of 1 June 2007, nationals of the EU-17/EFTA Member States are no longer bound to border zones. This means that cross-border commuters can work in all cantons. Information on mergers:
