The stock of road vehicles takes into account all civilian vehicles registered in Switzerland on 30 September and whose owners were domiciled in the country on that date.
Due to a revision of the main database (VAIS Vehicles) comparability of data from 2022 with those from previous years is slightly restricted. Altogether, some 34'000 vehicles with an export number plate and no longer in Switzerland were removed from the stock statistics in 2022.

Canton

The canton is defined by the owner's address and not by the registration plate.

The different vehicle types are defined in the Ordinance on the Technical Requirements for Road Vehicles (RVTRO) SR 741.41, art. 6 to 28 (in German).

Petrol

For passenger cars up to and including 2020 incl. vehicles without information on motor fuel. From 2021, these vehicles are assigned to the other category.

Other

For passenger cars from 2021 incl. vehicles without information on motor fuel. Up to and including 2020, these vehicles were assigned to the petrol category.
